Potato Council Grow Your Own

This project was introduced by the Potato Council 6 years ago, to educate young children about potatoes.  From the environment they need to grow in, to how good they are for everyone's health.

The event has grown across the country and embraced by over 11,500 schools.
All schools that sign up recieve a growing pack and are encouraged to record their findings.  This year we are one of the sponsors of this project and are actively participating in the project by growing our own potatoes.

The varieties which we are growing are the same as some regions:-

Casablanca
"Cathy" Casablanca" is a small potato that has:-
  • White skin with a creamy flesh
  • Floury texture
  • Good for chipping and frying
Rocket
"Rebecca" Rocket potatoes are classed as 1st early varieties which have:-
  • White skin and flesh
  • Waxy texture
  • Firm
  • Good for boiling
Piccolo Star
"Percy" Piccolo Star potatoes have:-
  • Yellow flesh
  • Smooth and creamy taste
  • Roast and sauté
  • Good for salad and Mediterranean dishes

Stage One

Chitting

We have placed our seeds on a tray in a light area to allow the sprouts to harden

Stage Two

Planting

Each variety have had one seed planted in plastic bottles for us to be able to see what is happening at all stages. The rest of the seed have been planted into grow bags for a real harvest.

Stage Three

1st Growth

The varieties of seed that has been planted in the grow bags have just appeared above the soils surface.  Looking healthy and strong so could be a good harvest.

1st Roots

The seeds that have been planted in the plastic bottles, have started to show off their root systems.  Within the next few days there will be growth happening above the surface as well.

Stage Four

Full Height

The plants are now thriving well and will be about halfway through their adventure.  Due to the recent dry spell the regular watering has had to be a little more frequent, just need to keep an eye on progress so not to over water.

Stage Five

1st Flower

Percy the Piccolo Star has come through and has produced a small little white flower, the first of what could be a number of flowers.  Just need to remember to keep watering well.

Final Stage

 The Potato Final

Percy and the others have flowered well even with the recent winds and exceptional drought, we've recently experienced.  We are proud of Percy's and the others performance and hope to do even better next year!

I hope yours have done really well too, and get to taste the freshness of your own potatoes!
