This project was introduced by the Potato Council 6 years ago, to educate young children about potatoes. From the environment they need to grow in, to how good they are for everyone's health.
The event has grown across the country and embraced by over 11,500 schools.
All schools that sign up recieve a growing pack and are encouraged to record their findings. This year we are one of the sponsors of this project and are actively participating in the project by growing our own potatoes.
The varieties which we are growing are the same as some regions:-
| "Cathy" Casablanca" is a small potato that has:- |
- White skin with a creamy flesh
- Floury texture
- Good for chipping and frying
|
| "Rebecca" Rocket potatoes are classed as 1st early varieties which have:- |
- White skin and flesh
- Waxy texture
- Firm
- Good for boiling
|
| "Percy" Piccolo Star potatoes have:- |
- Yellow flesh
- Smooth and creamy taste
- Roast and sauté
- Good for salad and Mediterranean dishes

The plants are now thriving well and will be about halfway through their adventure. Due to the recent dry spell the regular watering has had to be a little more frequent, just need to keep an eye on progress so not to over water. |
 |
Percy the Piccolo Star has come through and has produced a small little white flower, the first of what could be a number of flowers. Just need to remember to keep watering well. |
 |
Percy and the others have flowered well even with the recent winds and exceptional drought, we've recently experienced. We are proud of Percy's and the others performance and hope to do even better next year!
I hope yours have done really well too, and get to taste the freshness of your own potatoes! |
