Grow at Home
Growing potatoes at home is relatively easy, 3 small potato seeds should provide you with
between 2 and 4kg of fresh potatoes....

What you will need:-

  • A bucket - with a drainage hole in the bottom
  • 3 seed potatoes which can be found at any garden center.
  • Compost or soil
How to grow your potatoes:-

  • 2 weeks before you plant your potatoes place them in an empty cardboard egg carton on your window sill so that the shoots start growing (this is known as chitting)
  • Once the potatoes have strong hard roots fill the bucket 2/3rds full of compost then press the seeds into the soil with the shoots upwards. Fill the bucket near to the top with compost.
  • Place the bucket in a sunny position (avoiding direct sunlight).
  • As the plants grow add more compost around the base (around 2 or 3 times) and keep them well watered, especially when they start to flower. The soil should be moist but don’t over water. (water every 2 to 3 days)
  • To grow your potatoes to a bigger size remove any flowers the plants produce.
  • Over a period of time the leaves will naturally turn yellow, if you stop watering the leaves will naturally die, your potatoes can then be eaten immediately. Alternatively if you prefer your potato to have a firm, set skin leave for a further 4-6 weeks which will allow the skin to further form.
